If God said ‘get out of Iraq’ Would Bush listen?

Libby makes an excellent point. Instead of making his war decisions based on what Patraeus or Crocker say, why doesn’t Bush give a little priority to what IRAQ says. Afterall, it was the Decider himself who said,

We are there at the invitation of the Iraqi government. This is a sovereign nation. Twelve million people went to the polls to approve a constitution. It’s their government’s choice. If they were to say, leave, we would leave. […] We are there at their request. […] but if they were to make the request, we wouldn’t be there.

The AP reports that Maliki told Bush yesterday that he “disagrees” with Petraeus’s recommendation “citing the growing capabilities of Iraq’s own security forces”:

The prime minister told Bush during a 20-minute telephone conversation on Wednesday that Iraqi security forces are capable of carrying out their duties and U.S. troops should be pulled out as the situation permits, according to a senior government adviser who sat in on the phone conversation. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the confidential details.

Doesn’t it seem, considering that most Americans want us out, the troops themselves want out, the Iraqi people and their government want us out and our allies want us out, that there must be a particularly important reason why we are staying? Wouldn’t it be nice if, for once, the American people who elected him were let in on that reason?

Of course that won’t happen. We are the ignorant, poor masses and have no idea what is best for us or our country. Iraqi’s are also ignorant, poor masses and they have no idea what is best for them or their country. Only the Great Decider knows, and he and his personal army will maintain and even expand this war exactly as they see fit. Besides, God talks through him. We know that because he said so.

In a way, you just gotta love the guy. He’s a thin-lipped, lying, traitorous, lawbreaking, hypocritical little bastard but he is OUR thin-lipped, lying, traitorous, lawbreaking, hypocritical little bastard.
