R.I.P. Paul Newman

September 28, 2008

Sometimes there really are no words to do someone justice. He was a mega star and a philanthropist, a sportsman and a champion of the needy. I’m gonna miss him.

Tonight in Singapore, the first ever Formula 1 night race in history will be run. I have a feeling there will be a fitting tribute before the race. RIP Paul. Thanks for being here.

The Art of Bob Dylan

June 8, 2008

The talent of this man knows no bounds. H/t to 9 Pound Hammer for this gem.

After a successful art show in Germany last year, the songwriter has an art show opening at the Halcyon Gallery in London next week, featuring a collection of over 200 pictures, mostly color variations on the artwork published in “Drawn Blank.”

Speaking to the London Times about America, Dylan had this to say.

“Well, you know right now America is in a state of upheaval,” he says. “Poverty is demoralizing. You can’t expect people to have the virtue of purity when they are poor. But we’ve got this guy out there now who is redefining the nature of politics from the ground up…Barack Obama. He’s redefining what a politician is, so we’ll have to see how things play out. Am I hopeful? Yes, I’m hopeful that things might change. Some things are going to have to.” He offers a parting handshake. “You should always take the best from the past, leave the worst back there and go forward into the future,” he notes as the door closes between us.”

John Rambo

May 19, 2008

I just watched Rambo IV. It was brutally graphic, nonstop action and I just loved it. As Rambo, albeit an older, well seasoned one, Stallone still has what it takes. As a younger man I would have called it kickass. 5 stars.

Steve Martin Receives Well-Deserved Honor

December 4, 2007

steve-martin.jpgSteve Martin was honored at the annual Kennedy Center gala last night along with such greats as Diana Ross and Brian Wilson. It’s about time. Martin’s zany antics, slapstick style and perfect timing have made him one of the all time greats. There’s lots of good videos of his performances on Youtube. Here’s a little taste from SNL.

Pavarotti Dead at 71

September 6, 2007

318338.jpgLuciano Pavarotti, the bearded opera legend, died early Thursday after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. With his noted girth and cheeky duets with pop singers, the 71-year-old tenor was that rare maestro of classical music who was as instantly recognizable around the world as superstars from MTV and the movies.

He was also that rare singer who could entertain even those who did not normally enjoy or understand opera – like me. He will be missed.

Getting Naked for Global Warming

August 19, 2007

glacier.jpgBBC News – Nearly 600 men and women volunteers have stripped naked to pose for US photographer Spencer Tunick on the slope of a melting Swiss glacier. The photo shoot on the Aletsch glacier was commissioned by environmental group Greenpeace as part of a campaign to raise awareness about global warming. Despite the elevation (7545 feet), the temperature was well above freezing, at between 10 and 15C.

Tunick specializes in such scenes, which he calls “body landscapes”. His previous backdrops have ranged from Caracas to New York.

The Aletsch glacier is a protected Unesco World Heritage site.

Legendary Rockers

June 17, 2007

elton_john_narrowweb__300x4330.jpgSir Elton John is planning a free concert in Kiev, Ukraine to raise awareness of HIV/Aids. While homosexuality is legal there, gays are openly discriminated against in this largely Orthodox state. (story here)

Religion is responsible for a lot of the hatred people feel towards people like me,” says Petro Polyantsev, an HIV-positive gay rights activist. “We live with stigma, discrimination and homophobia. We constantly fear that we may be attacked just for being gay.”

The concert is part of a $5 million series of projects sponsored by Elton John’s Aids Foundation in the Ukraine. However, ignorant, homophobic religious fanatics are trying to boycott it.

“We believe that gay people are responsible for spreading Aids,” says Svyatoslav Domalevsky from The Union of Orthodox Citizens of Ukraine. “Elton John is gay and we don’t want him promoting that kind of lifestyle here.”

An estimated 400,000 people are HIV-positive in the Ukraine and the number will reach 1 in every 50 in the near future. It is believed that gay men make up only a small percentage of that figure.cocker.jpg

In other news BBC has a nice tribute up on another rock legend, Joe Cocker. He has always been one of my favorites and its great to see him still entertaining and touring 40 years after his unforgettable performance at Woodstock.
