Border Security Confiscating Laptops

We shouldn’t let this story slide under the radar even though it’s not really new. Customs Agents have apparently increased the number of laptop computers that they seize and “detain” indefinitely at border crossings. They’re also detaining Ipods, cell phones, and other digital storage devices in case the boogie man is hiding in your memory card. The devices are being confiscated from foreign and American citizens alike.

As the Washington Post reported yesterday, Border Patrol and Customs agents can now “detain” laptops “for a reasonable period of time” to “review and analyze information.” Article here.

They don’t need probable cause under the new policy. Doesn’t matter if you’re a U.S. citizen or foreign visitor. Officials can hold the laptops indefinitely. Or hard drives, flash drives, cellphones, iPods, pagers, beepers, video and audio tapes. Ditto papers, documents, books, pamphlets, even litter.

What have they found so far? Some videos of bombs going off in Iraq, some Jihadhist literature, whatever that is, and some intellectual property violations. OMG!!

This begs the question, what about leftist blogger files. I have backup files full of anti Bush articles and pictures. Do I need to delete these before I visit in December? I suppose I should play it safe and clean up my hard drive.

But isn’t it a shame that I have to? I seem to remember when we all had the freedom to dissent, even against our own government or president. And there was a time when personal privacy was a given. Not to mention freedom of speech. Not anymore. Now what we have is the re-emergence of Nazism. All Bush lacks is the moustache.

I wrote a piece on this several weeks ago. Basic bottom line – you have no rights at the border. They are also going after cell phones, ipods….all electronic toys.

Australia is considering checking your electronics to make sure all music and movie downloads are properly licensed. If not, you’re a criminal.

    Now……..where is the productive outrage?

Yeah, I had a bunch of pirated dvd’s I was gonna bring my son and ofcourse, a few illegal downloads on the laptop. I’ve nixed those ideas. I’m gonna cross the border as a squeaky clean, ultra legal Bush hater and see what happens.

The irony of it all is that no half-intelligent person would carry “sensitive” info. They would email it to themselves or down load it from a secure server once they got into the country.

It seems to me that significant portion of the so called “free” western world is doing the utmost to become a police state. At least that is the impression I get when I read about some of the doings in Australia, Britain, and the U.S. I’m not hearing it so much about Canada. (Though I did hear Martha Stewart was denied entry into CA because she is a felon.)

Are all these laptops, mp3 players that get detained at the immigration, confiscated for the personal use of immigration staff? :p

  5. expatbrian Says:

I doubt that, as that would be theft. But I’ve heard they may be kept for investigation for months before being returned.

Bush also lacks some basic intelligence and a understanding of the common people.
His allegiance seems to be with oil billionaires and Saudi princes. Any more of this crap is going to sink America…whups, that already happened…our dollar and economy stinks.

Confiscating laptops why ? Are they after your banking details ? …….. That is what UNCENSORED magazine says . Mainstream media has this censored so as to please the travel industry .
