Goodbye Fourth Amendment

The fourth amendment, the one that prohibits illegal and warrantless searches and seizures was, once and for all, flushed down the toilet by YOUR United States Senate. They did this by ending debate on the FISA bill which in essence grants immunity to the telecom companies who willingly participated in tapping YOUR phone lines, intercepting YOUR emails and presumably even YOUR text messages.

This was done of course, because it would be considered very bad form for Bush to (a) ask them to violate YOUR constitutional rights and then (b) prosecute them when they were caught doing so. Not to mention all that pesky money they donate to the republican cause.

Hey, isn’t it great having a democratic majority in the Senate? I remember when we were all cheering over that one. The vote was 67 to 31.

I’m not really sure if “ask” is the right term. I’m fairly sure that the threat of punishment or other coercive techniques were employed to get the TelCos to agree to do this. That’s why I’m in favor of the granting them immunity from prosecution and civil suits.

Now, if you want to go after the government over this…that’s a different story. 😉
