Promoting Human Torture

graph2.jpgThere is an interesting article at Human Rights First concerning torture on prime time TV. While it used to be that only the bad guys were depicted as capable of torture, today the good guys from shows like Lost, 24 and even Law & Order are using torture as a justifyable means to get the bad guys.

TV is a powerful medium and the article makes a case that this shift which shows our TV heroes using inhumane methods of interogation is changing the way we think and behave when it comes to torture. It’s worth a look.

The power of the media, perhaps especially the entertainment medi, is undoubtedly powerful. Too many people grow their philosophies and form their view of the world from television, movies and novels. They look on fiction as being fact. Hell, how many people believe the majority of we baby boomers grew up in a “Leave It To Beaver” world?

I like your analogy of “the Beav”. Or maybe Robert Young coming home everyday saying “Honey, I’m home”, and Jane Wyatt swaying into the room in her dress and pearls to welcomoe him in Father Knows Best. It’s absurd but you are right. On the other hand, when we were watching that or Donna Reed or even Bewitched, our crime rates were much lower and our streets were safer. Does TV reflect life or does life reflect TV. Both I think.

Freedom, especially freedom of speech, is not all it’s cracked up to be.
