Tancredo is a dumbass

I didn’t watch the last republican debate but I’m surprised I missed this quote. When asked if he would advertise his campaign in Spanish, Tom Tancredo said he would not. Then puffing up his chest to make it sound as if he actually had a chance in hell of winning the nomination, he made this utterly stupid statement.

Believe me when I tell you the preservation of the English language is important for us for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is it holds us together,” he said. “It is the glue that keeps a country together. Any country. Bilingual countries don’t work, and we should not encourage it.”

First of all, much of the southwestern US, including California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona used to be Mexican territory. Hell, most of the cities and towns are named in Spanish. I’m from San Jose, you know, near San Francisco? The capital is Sacramento. All north of Los Angeles and San Diego. Not to mention the fact that a large segment of those populations are hispanic – legal hispanic.

They probably don’t anymore but when I was in high school we were required to take a foreign language. Why? Because everyone knew that speaking a second language had value.

But most importantly, Tancredo is just wrong. There are many bilingual nations on earth that work just fine, thank you. I live in one. Here in Singapore school children are required to take English and their mother tongue from first grade through high school. They all speak both. Why? Because in todays world it makes sense Tom, you jerk.

As far as not working, hmm. Lets see. Government operates on a $100 billion surplus annually. No slums. Ridiculously low crime rate. Clean and safe country. Universal retirement savings plan including medisave. No wars with anybody. Most modern nation in Southeast Asia. Airport rated number one in the world by business travelers. This list goes on and on. Something is working despite these folks being bilingual.

Tom, that was a dumbass thing to say. How the hell did you ever got elected to the senate?

Yeah, when I think of failed states, I always think of Belgium and Switzerland.

Mit der Dummheit kämpfen Götter selbst vergebens. The gods themselves struggle in vain against stupidity. Why should we have it easier?

India has what – 700 languages? The Borough of Queens, NY has more, I think, but what everyone seems to forget is the First amendment which says that congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech.

Now I know old Tancroid may not fully understand what the word abridge means, but to me it means to qualify or restrict or make smaller and it means I will speak whatever the hell language I want to whenever I want to call him an idiot.

These morons swore to uphold the constitution!
