Squeezing the Last Drop from our Resources

I read an article not too long ago that said if all the people in all the countries on earth used the same amount of natural resources per capita that the US does, it would take 5 planet earths to support them. This makes sense to me. While most people in the US live at the middle class or lower level, they still enjoy a lifestyle that is not attainable by most people.

As our natural resources are finite in nature, it follows that this situation will not change. Indeed, as industrialized countries like the US and western Europe, continue to rape the world’s resources in order to maintain their lifestyle, the rest of the world’s supply will continue to dwindle. Those in power realize this ofcourse, and it makes me a little suspicious when I hear the governments or the UN talk about attempts to raise the standards in places like Africa and Latin America. This will never happen in any meaningful way because the rich are not going to lower their standard of living to increase that of the poor.

This leads to another, more close to home scenario. Within the US, the wealthy have no intention of sharing their resources with the masses. They don’t have to. They will always be able to afford to pay for the resources they require to maintain their standard of living no matter what the price. And they will also be able to control the government and thus control the laws that give them the right to do so even if it means driving the masses into poverty.

I am reminded of this quote, that I posted in 2005. It comes from a US history book that was written in 1939. Some things never change, they just get worse.

“It matters not one iota what political party is in power or what president holds the reins of office. We are not politicians or public thinkers; we are the rich; we own America; we got it, God knows how, but we intend to keep it if we can by throwing all the tremendous weight of our support, our influence, our money, our political connections, our purchased senators, our hungry congressmen, our public-speaking demagogues into the scale against any legislature, any political platform, any presidential campaign that threatens the integrity of our estate.”
