Exxon Valdez, 17 Years Later

17 years after the court’s awarded $5 billion in punitive damages to 34,000 Alaska Indians for the losses they suffered due to the largest oil spill in history, Exxon has not paid a penny of that money. In their third, stalling appeal they managed to get that amount reduced to $2.5 billion. They are fighting to get it down to “the reasonable amount” of $25 million. In other words, fuck the poor indians.

The fact that a lawsuit like this can be dragged through the courts for 17 years while the victims receive nothing is a testament to the absolute erosion of the US justice system. And as long as the oil companies own congress, it ain’t gonna change. Nice going Exxon, you assholes.
